The trip was envisioned and planned by nine year Oliver for his school math fair. His project focused on optimizing travel time and maximizing sightseeing. Oliver named this project Tesla Coast to Coast. Today we are traveling from Woodland, Kanas to St. Louis, Missouri. This is a bit father than originally planned, but we are trying to get out of the wet weather and get to some better camping weather. Today’s trip takes us through Kansas City where we will meet up with an old friend from the days long before our current reality. In St. Louis, we’ll be camping on Route 66 so we will will have one last re-connection with that special road. </div>
<div class="p2">

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">As we left our motel in Goodland, a blacked out and de-badged Tesla was parked in one of the charging stalls. Oliver was intrigued because the black on black car had no markings (de-badged), dark tinted windows, and tinted headlights. It was a California car so we figured it was another coaster. It was a gentleman traveling with is three kids. We didn’t speak to them as we were on the way out. As we travelled, Oliver and I spent a bit of time talking about why people customize their cars in that way. We ran in to the group again at the Topeka charging station. There, we spoke with one of the kids, gave him our flyer, and gave him a Tesla HotWheel. They were on their way to New York. So, yes they were doing a coast to coast trip as well. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">At our charging station in Independence, Missouri, just outside of Kansas City, we had arranged to meet with Robert Stringer. For those that don’t know Robert is one of Chris’ friends from our days in Southern California. He used to game with Chris and eventually worked for us at Complete Business Solutions. After working with one of our notorious customers for a while, Robert eventually moved on to study Physics and eventually do his doctoral work with CERN on the <a href="https://home.cern/topics/large-hadron-collider"><span class="s2">Large Hadron Collider</span></a>. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Before Robert arrived, we met a nice gentleman named Paul Khoury whose wife had just convinced him to purchase a Model X. His awesome new black on black P90 still had the dealer plate. Oliver was checking it out when Paul asked us if we had ever taken a long trip in our Tesla. I guess he ran into the right people to ask. We shared our story with him, talked about our travels, and showed him how to change the charge limit on the car. As a congratulatory gift to Oliver for getting first place in the state math fair, Paul gave us all a comped dinner at his <a href="http://www.redrobin.com/locations/missouri/independence/independence.html"><span class="s2">Red Robin </span></a>restaurant down the street. </span></div>

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Robert showed up at the charger a little later. We spent a few minutes showing Robert and his twin boys, Nathaniel and Nicholas, the Tesla and proceeded to the restaurant. Nathaniel and Nicholas road with us in the Tesla to the restaurant. We gave them a demonstration of AutoSteer and the Acceleration. They were impressed, but didn’t want anymore demonstrations in city traffic. At the restaurant, we ended up talking about old times and what became of our infamous customers whom Robert went on to work for back in the day. Eventually, the kids got to talking about Minecraft. We spent a little longer than we should have, but had a great time. Thanks to Paul and his staff at the restaurant for serving up a great time.</span></div>
<div class="p2">

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">At our charge stop in Columbia, Missouri, we ran into that blacked our Model S from California again. This time we spoke with the group a bit and found out that they were going to New York and back in 11 days. So, their trip was much more hectic than ours. They told us they were going to visit the replica of Noah’s Ark that was be built. That made me think of the famous riff that Bill Cosby did related to Noah. So, we all listened to part of it and had a laugh. We wished them well on their journey and made our way on to St. Louis. </span></div>

Today we left our soggy campsite and moved on to Evergreen, Colorado. Later we will end the day in Goodland, Kansas. Our big event for the day was to be a long visit with Uncle Bob in Evergreen. But, after speaking with Bob a bit, we decided to take a short side trip to Mount Evans, Colorado which is near Evergreen. We would still meet for lunch with Bob later in the day. The road at the top of Mount Evans, is the highest paved road in the Continental United States. Of course, we had to take the Tesla up mount just to say we did it. We hoped the weather would cooperate as it has been very overcast and wet in Colorado for this portion of the trip. Our travels to Evergreen took us through some very nice mountain ranges and interesting roadways. There’s definitely more to take in than our short stay would allow. </div>

The drive up the mountain was spectacular. The further up we got, the road became less wide and Oliver became more nervous. Our travels were complicated by the fact that there was an annual bicycling event happening where bikers pedal to the 14,000 foot peak. Not much room for an SUV, a Tesla, and a bike to pass on those thin winding roads that have no guardrails. At the 12,830 foot level, there was a glacier lake, reset area, and an information area. We stopped there to take a break and check out the sights. We met some park employees who were giving out information on the wildlife of the park. Oliver and I had a great conversation with them and learned much about the environment. </span></div>

A two lane road became a one and one half lane road. There were no guardrails and the road was in rough shape. Oliver go more nervous the further we travelled upwards. When we reached the top, it was 41 degrees out. We parked, put on our jackets, and proceed explore. Oliver was very nervous about the heights so he stayed far from the edges. We chatted with some of the bicyclists and bit, hiked where we could, and then got back in the car to begin our journey downward. After exiting the park, we stopped at what Bob told us was a “Cool Lodge”. He was right, we picked up a traditional postcard and moved on to visit Bob for a late lunch.</span></div>

<span class="s1">When we arrived in Evergreen, we discovered there was a big fundraiser for local charities going. It seems they like to race rubber ducks down the river like we do in Durham. Parking was hard to come by but we found a spot. Surprisingly, Bob had a spot nearby and we found him with no trouble. We had our lunch at Beau Jo’s - Evergreen. Lunch was great and we had a great time catching up with Bob. We gave him ride in the Tesla and showed him many of the features. He’s been asking lots of questions since. </span></div>

They stayed past closing for us and made us a great dinner. Coincidentally, we ran in to a fellow from Charlotte, NC who rode his bike up Mt. Evans earlier in the day. Wonder if we passed him going up or down. Since we left after they closed, the Tesla was the only car in the parking lot. A good chance to get some pictures. They had signs our front with distances to many major destinations around the world. Because of this, we dubbed the place "The Middle of Everywhere". </span></div>

<div class="p1">
Today we started a little closer to our Colorado destination than originally planned. Because of this and our late arrival late night, we decided to relax a bit and hang out at our hotel until checkout time. We spend some time in the outdoor pool, swam some laps, and relaxed a bit. This sounded great but would prove to be our downfall as Oliver discovered another possible destination along our route, Arches, Utah. He wanted to see the landform that was used for Utah license plate. </div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">After we left Provo, Utah and got out of the more populated areas, we drove through some beautiful canyons. The road paralleled the old train route, so it was a good change to discuss the challenges of planning rail routes through mountain terrain. Another thing of note was the use of wind power generators in the area. They were really close to the road, so, unlike what we saw in Oklahoma, we could get idea of the large size of these windmills . They are huge. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">

As he was checking off the many parks he’s visited, he discovered The Arches Utah. Somehow we missed this park in our planning and it was only 50 miles out of the way. He noted that there was an arch there called Delicate Arch which was used on the Utah license plate. We altered our plans a bit and headed in that direction. When we arrived we had pay yet another National Parks pass, we really should have studied a bit more and got the annual pass, at this point we would have spent about $15 less doing things that way. Because time was at a premium, we went to straight to the visitor center for some planning assistance. While there we spoke with Marshal Page who gave us the scoop on which arch was used for the license plate and where we could view it. Because get right up to required a hike that Oliver wasn’t to prepare to endure, we chose to visit the location that we could see the arch with the naked eye and be satisfied with being that close. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Out drive out to the view point was spectacular, Oliver took tons of photos as we drove along and say many amazing sites. Once issue we continued to fight was time, it was getting later in the day and the drive to the viewpoint was pretty far into the park. We really should have planned on spending the day out here. When we arrived at the parking of the viewpoint it was packed with German tourists. I am sure some of the same tourists from our Grand Canyon visit were there with us. Oliver spotted Delicate Arch first and got very excited. He was finally able to see what inspired the Utah license plates he had been seeing. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">After the viewing, we made our way out of the park and went to Moab to charge and get dinner. We ate at a really nice pasta place that was near the charger. Ae finished dinner about the time the car was ready to go. Everybody was full and ready to move on to Colorado!</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">As we neared the Utah/Colorado state line we had a small incident. There was a skunk who had decided that crossing the interstate was the thing to do when traffic was thick. Unfortunately, there was no place for a to go to avoid him as we were boxed in by a car on our left and not able to stop in time to save him. We ended up hitting the skunk and Oliver got to smell skunk for the first time. The smell lingered in the car for a long time. We actually had to stop at a car wash before turning in for the night to be sure we eliminated all remains of the odor from the underside of the car. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">All this excitement made our arrival at our campsite in Colorado, very late. We ended up setting up camp in the dark and rushed to our sleeping bags for some shuteye. I was a little lazy and didn’t install the rain fly. To his credit, Oliver told be do so. This would prove to be a bit of an issue as it started drizzling just after we woke up and went to the bathroom the next morning. We are now experts at the quick camp teardown. I’ll not ignore Oliver’s intuitions next time.</span></div>

Our trip took us by the Tesla Gigafactory so we just had to make a stop there. We also went through in Ely, Nevada where our family has some property. We didn’t have much time for side trips as this was one of those long travel days so most of our exploring was form the car seat. </div>

<span class="s1">Our first stop was just outside Reno. It was the Tesla Gigafactory. There have been stories of people be escorted off by Tesla security so we played it cool and didn’t push any boundaries. While we had to stay quite a ways away, it was clear to see that the building is huge. The size lives up the hype. </span><br />

<span class="s1">Oliver wanted to stop in Lovelock, Nevada, the home of the airport with the code LOL. Turns out we missed the airport, but we did get to stop in and check out the town a bit. We spent the first half of Day 13 checking out the San Francisco sights and tourist attractions. The latter part of the day we spent traveling to Reno. In the our travels to Reno, we stopped at a solar powered charging station/service/sales center, and visited Lake Tahoe both the California and Nevada sides.</div>

These are some of Oliver’s favorite Sand Francisco spots. While leaving the Palace of Fine Arts, we saw one of those Amazon delivery robots on the sidewalk. We didn’t get a chance to take a photo, sorry. But it was fun seeing some people checking it out. At the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, we climbed the super steep bridge and then went and had a really nice little tea party. As is customary, Oliver got a <a href="http://www.apple.com/"><span class="s2">Ramune drink</span></a>, orange this time. We aren’t sure if likes the look of the bottle or the taste more. </span></div>

<div class="p1">
On the way to Lake Tahoe, we stopped in Rocklin, California to charge. In Rocklin, there’s a Tesla solar powered charging station/service/sales center. About 80% of the power used by this facility is generated by solar panels on site. Of course, we charged there. So, a portion of our trip was powered by the sun! It’s interesting because a large portion of the parking area is covered. Those covered areas have solar cells mounted on them. This is one of the only charges where the cars being charged were parked in the shade. A nice bonus on those hot sunny California days. Oliver took the opportunity to promote the blog on the center’s computers. </div>

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">We arrived at Lake Tahoe a little later than originally planned because we spent more time in San Francisco. The Lake did not disappoint. It was really nice up there. We visited the Sand Harbor area. The topography was interesting with sandy beaches and boulder formations for Oliver to explore. We spent about an hour checking out the location. Oliver did a water temperature check for us on one of the beaches, it was fun watching him try to stay dry while small waves were threatening to prevent that from happening. </span></div>

<span class="s1">From Lake Tahoe, we moved on to Reno. Along the way, we saw quite a few classic cars on the road and on trailers moving towards Reno. Oliver wanted to get some pool time in so we hung out at the pool a bit and then got tucked in with Mom for our last night together as she will be getting back on a plane for home in the morning. </span></div>

The big day has arrived! It is Day 12 and Oliver gets to visit the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. Joining us on this tour will be fellow Tesla fan and cousin Monica. Our tour is scheduled for 10 AM. We got up bright and early so we could arrive by 9 AM, the time we thought the customer delivery center opened. Turns out it opened at 10 AM so we ended up spending some time visiting the property. During our explorations, we visited one of the employee/visitors entrances to the factory, they have a very nice setup. One happy coincidence was that Tesla was testing a joint venture with a washing service for those that are supercharging. The service claims to use just one cup of water to wash a car. Ours probably took two as we brought part of Death Valley with us. After Monica arrived, we spent some time catching up on things and showing her our car. For this post don't expect too many pictures from inside the factory, No cameras are allowed.<br />

Our tour guide, Adam, came out a little before 10 AM to get all tour attendees ready for the tour. Everyone over 18 was asked to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements. Adam was going to have Oliver complete one, but Ollie got lucky. From there we were taken into the factory. At the tour assembly area, they have some significant Tesla prototypes on display. They even had a celebrity on the display, the Roadster that appeared in Iron Man. We were given a lesson on metallurgy and plastics manufacturing. We got to sample the some of the aluminum components to see how light they are. After that we, boarded an electric tram (DC Motor and Lead Acid Batteries) that would take us through the plant. The plant is huge. Employees use bikes to travel through the factory it's that large.<br />
<br />
In the factory there is an impressive array of technology. Robots everywhere doing all sorts of tasks. Huge presses forming metal. Scanning devices for ensuring parts are at tolerances smaller than hair's width. All this was going on, in an very clean environment. Robots can't work without supervision and there's a ton of it. Employees everywhere doing everything. Like many tech companies, there are free soda and snack machines available. In addition, they looked to have a very well appointed cafe for the employees. The tour lasted about an hour, but we could have spent a day in there. Short and sweet is still neat. Adam, our tour guide, was very enthusiastic. I suppose this is enthusiasm run throughout the company and that what makes game changing companies.<br />

After the tour, we spent some time shopping in the Tesla store and speaking with Adam about Tesla in the early days. He shared many great stories with us and we got some information from a true insider. After most everyone from the tour was dispersed, Oliver received a special gift from the management. In honor of his winning the North Carolina State Math Fair for his Tesla Coast to Coast project, Adam gave Oliver a 1:18 scale limited edition Tesla Model S that was molded using the equipment they mold the plastic parts used in the interior of the cars. This is a very cool piece that Oliver will cherish for quite some time.<br />
<br />
After Tesla, we had a nice lunch with Monica. We ate a restaurant that pretended to be Irish but didn't have a lick of Irish food. It was good to catch up and exchange stories as we haven't seen Monica in person for several years.<br />

It is a game oriented hotel <br />
they had table tennis, shuffleboard, miniature shuffleboard, circular table tennis, connect four, backgammon, and more. Oliver's favorites were connect four and the circular table tennis. After some hardcore gaming, we went on over to Boudin's for a light dinner and then on to Ghirardelli's for a chocolaty treat. <br />
<br />
Another great day on our Tesla Coast to Coast tour!<br />

Today we trekked on to San Francisco. In doing so, we passed through Yosemite National Park. Are route took us through <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tioga_Pass" target="_blank">Tioga Pass</a> This is one of the higher points of our 7500 mile journey. It was nice an cool on this part of the journey so we were able to open the sunroof and let some sunshine in without getting sandblasted or pressure cooked.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcwRSjyy2W_H1ZUaDCzE0xDIWDlCWFQOQ_RFo19AuMpqQY7OlWu0pkiyazcI07ak9fRI-94BSP6ztTlJWe2VDtUSCMret0tO9P1rEJdzW4M3I93QamTNeZEIuRpEer2d_70C0OQAXyV8U/s1600/Day11+-+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcwRSjyy2W_H1ZUaDCzE0xDIWDlCWFQOQ_RFo19AuMpqQY7OlWu0pkiyazcI07ak9fRI-94BSP6ztTlJWe2VDtUSCMret0tO9P1rEJdzW4M3I93QamTNeZEIuRpEer2d_70C0OQAXyV8U/s200/Day11+-+2.jpg" width="200" /></a>If you haven't visited, Yosemite is a must-see. When you are there, be sure to stop by the Visitor Center inside the park and speak with Jenny. She was very helpful and gave us a heads up on on the great spots to see when you are short on time. You really can't do Yosemite in one-day, this is a place that spending a few days hiking and soaking it all in would be the minimum experience.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyZUeeKO1sozTgP9ZBhCv7NFCVgbwpeUiqW3C5AFTtuxe0jU-Qbz9M3Sr9YX63hRY2zunn3JpHNYKX64JQoRpCpHFubPmLGGiPfrmshEqgRXIgLhGajSWdDZryaNgU3e7E3bcRFEYTo9Q/s1600/Day11+-+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyZUeeKO1sozTgP9ZBhCv7NFCVgbwpeUiqW3C5AFTtuxe0jU-Qbz9M3Sr9YX63hRY2zunn3JpHNYKX64JQoRpCpHFubPmLGGiPfrmshEqgRXIgLhGajSWdDZryaNgU3e7E3bcRFEYTo9Q/s200/Day11+-+10.jpg" width="200" /></a>One hike we did do was a two mile hike to <br />
see the Sequoias. The one mile hike down was easy. The one mile hike back up was a bit much for Oliver. He has much work to do to prepare for our hike of the Grand Canyon that he's planning. The sequoias we visited were not as impressive as the Redwood Forest, but still worth the hike. Just plan some extra time. Distances on maps can be deceiving.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
We spent three more hours in Yosemite than planned. We could have spend three more days or even a week.<br />
<br />
Our first evening in San Francisco was spent getting situated with a smaller room than usual and exploring our interesting hotel, <a href="http://www.hotelzephyrsf.com/" target="_blank">Hotel Zephyr</a> This is a boutique hotel whose theme is fun and games. It's in the spot we like to hang out when we visit San Francisco and had a surprisingly good parking setup. In fact, the Tesla had a great view of the bay! We had dinner at <a href="https://www.boudinbakery.com/at-the-wharf" target="_blank">Boudin'</a>s.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow is the big day! The Tesla factory visit. We won't be able to take pictures, but I'm sure we will have lots of stories.<br />

Today we travelled through Death Valley and then then on to Mammoth Lakes. We drove below sea level and then up to 8000 feet above sea level. This was a new test for us as we haven't take the Tesla on many mountain trips, we were fully loaded, and had no idea what to expect in terms of energy usage. Other than charging stops, our planned stops were the bottle house in Rhyolite at an entrance to Death Valley, Stove Pipe wells, and some place called Vista Point. Well, it turns out that there are lots of Vista Points. We had much to see.<br />

Our first stop was Rhyolite. The first time I visited Rhyolite was on a band trip in 1977, in 40 years the place has changed a bit. I believe the house has been rebuilt and items rearranged. It's also now fenced and received the national park treatment. Oliver was intrigued by the construction of the house and the artifacts contained within.<br />

Our next stop was at the sand dunes of Death Valley. This would be the hottest stop of the trip so far. The reading in the car indicated 123 degrees. So, pretty much a typical summer day in Las Vegas. It felt good to be in the heat, but Oliver wasn't having it. He wanted to get back into the air conditioned comfort of the and out of this furnace. We spent just enough time to look around, get a few pictures, and sand into our shoes. That sand would end up staying with us for a few days.<br />
<br />
After the dunes, we stopped and had lunch at Stove Pipe wells. We had lunch in the car as it was too hot for Oliver, the North Carolina native. After lunch, we continued onward through the valley and stopped at Vista Point...a few times.<br />
<br />
Our last charging stop before Mammoth Lakes was Lone Pine. According to our Tesla navigation system, the chargers were functioning intermittently. In Beatty, before entering Death Valley, we called Tesla customer service to assess situation. The agent indicated that it was because there was intermittent power in the area and not an equipment failure. So, we went for it rather than go around Death Valley. Fortunately for us, the chargers in Lone Pine were working great and we had no issues. While there, we visited the Cowboy museum and I was able to tell Oliver some things about his Grandpa Hines. It was a good stop.<br />
<br />
We reached Mammoth Lakes in time to get a nice swim in the pool. After our swim, we ran into Oliver's cousin Cash and his mom Michelle. It was just a happy coincidence that they were vacationing here at the same time.<br />
<br />
Traveling through the mountains produced some very interesting energy curves. While we used more power than usual going up the hills, we regenerated gobs of power going down the hills. In one downward trek, we travelled 13 miles but had more range at the end of that portion than the beginning. Perhaps we should have kept more accurate records so that Oliver could have data for a future math project.<br />
<br />
Day 10 was a very memorable day!<br />

This is because we arrived from Arizona the night before and will not be moving on to California until the next day. Yes, we spent two nights at the Hines Ranch Resort and recuperate a bit from the rigors of our 7500 mile journey.<br />
<br />
We got to hang out with Chris and Louis in the morning before they had to get off to work. Chris setup Oliver with a load of Quarters to search through for National Park and State themed quarters to finish out his selection. I don't believe we ever worked out what Oliver was supposed to trade for them. I am sure Uncle Chris won't forget and will hit him up for something at a later date.<br />
<br />

We spent the rest of the morning hanging out at the ranch and checking up on the improvements that were in process. We also visited with Loki the goat. Because it gets pretty warm as the day progresses we went to visit the Airplane Shop (Airplanes are Oliver's other big hobby besides Teslas), have some lunch, and see Star Trek Beyond.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2JbmKSU0NJsZXLRV_W4tXBdxvJmr5HOKbO771nU2m-ch5dxXmWIyRkFEZdL7J7OU8pozfIGxlTtEvf5sllt_v09pkbg1ZQsXJZ-VAAl3zffVHjOQ1G87rRjfcrkjN4WWv61Gv4WGaGac/s1600/Day9+-+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2JbmKSU0NJsZXLRV_W4tXBdxvJmr5HOKbO771nU2m-ch5dxXmWIyRkFEZdL7J7OU8pozfIGxlTtEvf5sllt_v09pkbg1ZQsXJZ-VAAl3zffVHjOQ1G87rRjfcrkjN4WWv61Gv4WGaGac/s200/Day9+-+4.jpg" width="200" /></a>In the evening, we played a big game of Monopoly - Hines Ranch Edition. This is a version of Monopoly that Oliver created for his Uncle Chris last year. Interestingly, the ranch has been changing so much that some of the properties don't exist in the same form any longer or don't exist any more.<br />
<br />
Overall, we had a great time getting ourselves together for the rest of our journey. As usual, thanks to Uncle Chris and Aunt V for taking care us during our stay.<br />

When we arrived in the Grand Canyon Village on the evening of Day 7, we were greeted by a deer grazing in the motel parking lot. If the place is good enough for him, we guessed it would be good enough for us. For some reason we ended up getting the largest room I've ever had in a motel, this was more like a Las Vegas resort room. We ended up sleeping in a bit the next morning, but that isn't too much of an issue since we had a short jaunt to Vegas planned for later in the day.<br />

We chose to drive into the Grand Canyon park instead of taking the shuttle. We ended up in what turned out to be the slowest lane. This ended up being the theme of the day. After we passed through the gates, we had a bit of trouble finding parking in the first two lots, but lucky in the third with an easy to remember spot right next to the visitors center.<br />

We started by watching the video in the visitor's center. This was a great introduction for Oliver. her really enjoyed the video. Oliver was a bit nervous about being close to the canyon edge as we explored the rim. At Mather point, he hung out in the center of the outcrop for most of the time.<br />
<br />
We ended up having lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge. Our wait for a table was short, but it took quite a while to have someone take our order and ultimately deliver the order. The food was pretty good however and it would keep us satisfied until our dinner stop on the way to Las Vegas.<br />

<br />
On our way out of the Grand Canyon, we ended up getting stuck in a traffic jam caused by a couple who decided to stop in the middle of the two lane road, get out of their car, walk 400 feet to see a herd of deer, take some photos, an then casually walk back to their car. There were plenty of angry campers in that line of cars.<br />

There was one important stop left on this portion of our journey, that was Bedrock. Yes folks, we had to stop in and visit Fred, Barney, Wilma, Betty, Dino, Bam Bam, and Pebbles. This property is <a href="http://www.bedrockaz.com/images/subjects/for-sale/Bedrock-Brochure-2014-FSBO.pdf" target="_blank">for sale</a> should you be interested. In it's day, I'm sure this was a stop for many fans. But with the show losing ground to all the comic properties that have come since, it's mostly just a fun stop for us oldies the reminisce. Oliver's favorite part was some of the vehicles on the grounds and he made sure we got some pictures of him sitting in them.<br />
<br />
The ending with our making our way to Vegas for a two night stop at the world famous Hines Ranch.<br />

Oliver has been looking forward to this visit for about two years now. This will be a very special visit for him. As you know from our day 6 post, we've picked up a new passenger. Mom will be with use through Reno, NV. We look forward to having her join our road Monopoly matches and our explorations along the way.<br />
<br />
<br />
There are two boneyards that we are visiting, a military base and a commercial operation. To to see the military base facility, we need to take a tour bus bus form the Pima air museum so we'll get the bonus tour of the museum as part of the package. The commercial operation doesn't really do tours so we'll have to be satisfied with looking over the fence from the public roads.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4xPMNx6NhMkIWzgWLzJx2Xh1Mbj-WT4EJX0HccUUgzzL-RnNnsIdRymn0r8ytcxJbsgYq0RxSk1HxVF9-hUjBayLzeWCYEKRdVMzENOKInmKcIxu5BA_LRk6mJIsixzCL30wwVDKmf54/s1600/Day7+-+21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4xPMNx6NhMkIWzgWLzJx2Xh1Mbj-WT4EJX0HccUUgzzL-RnNnsIdRymn0r8ytcxJbsgYq0RxSk1HxVF9-hUjBayLzeWCYEKRdVMzENOKInmKcIxu5BA_LRk6mJIsixzCL30wwVDKmf54/s200/Day7+-+21.jpg" width="200" /></a>We took the tram tour of the Pima Air Museum first. It was pretty warm out and the facility is quite large, 80 acres, so this was a good choice. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and thorough. This was a bonus for us as we were able to learn much about the aircraft that we wouldn't have learned otherwise. Oliver was most intrigued by the planes that had propellers that were placed in a row and spun in opposing directions. One of Oliver's favorite planes turned out to be the Bumblebee, one of the worlds smallest working aircraft that will carry a person.<br />

There were over 4000 aircraft in various states. Some were in type 1000 storage. These were complete aircraft that could be made ready to fly with little effort. The other aircraft were there to supply parts as needed for other aircraft, to be on display to prove to other nations that we've decommissioned them as part of a treaty, or to be crushed and have the metals recycled. I was most intrigued with the stealth fighter, it was very difficult to see from the bus but I am sure the technicians have a special way to view it. Oliver's favorite were the A10 aircraft of which he's an expert flyer in his flight simulator.<br />
<br />
In the end we spent 5 hours at the Pima Air Museum and Boneyard tour. More than originally planned, but well worth it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPRQYbgXi7B27fWDAw_OyLZv_eiM8VGb_ErfbVGIeQsP0UNa0ksGczcweLraZfQZ5mYmjotsrZwcYOxBIKWLHBiqLxUNBrRdiha_9B0XMYdsBFXXNs6pGzK7nRTLFD_DnNjcMYt90gxBw/s1600/Day7+-+22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPRQYbgXi7B27fWDAw_OyLZv_eiM8VGb_ErfbVGIeQsP0UNa0ksGczcweLraZfQZ5mYmjotsrZwcYOxBIKWLHBiqLxUNBrRdiha_9B0XMYdsBFXXNs6pGzK7nRTLFD_DnNjcMYt90gxBw/s200/Day7+-+22.jpg" width="200" /></a>The commercial boneyard was on the other side of Tucson on our way to the Grand Canyon. While we couldn't go in, we were able to see a slew of 747s and others in various states of storage and disassembly. Oliver was a bit tired at this point but still interested in the various carriers and aircraft represented.<br />

Today we traveled from Gallup, New Mexico to Tucson, Arizona. Along the way, we had one major stop planned and a stop at Tucson International airport to pickup another participant in this crazy adventure. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our major planned stop was Meteor Crater, Arizona, the site of one of the best preserved meteor impacts on the planet. The last time I visited this site was 27 years ago when I travelled with my brother Nick from Las Vegas to Saint Mary's of the Plains in Kansas. He was drafted by the school to play basketball. Of course, in those days we did not have auto-pilot. On that trip, I had planned to take a leisurely jaunt down I-40 with a couple of overnight stays. Nick had different plans, we ended up driving the whole thing flat out, other than the stop to visit the meteor. and to eat. But I digress, back to our Tesla journey. </div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj48gCIN5udzHuhTiBu0xP1yuPYOwQyMwoIN8p4Y2AGBVnDs_A6PMYQT0bfktf0J1QCtWFt49ExVrrV2QzZvkwW25tQ8ic8tMVIlyMS5yuBH7yVi_wlrkEMTtnREahQd1Xn7hiEcy0AdeE/s1600/Meteor+Crater+-+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj48gCIN5udzHuhTiBu0xP1yuPYOwQyMwoIN8p4Y2AGBVnDs_A6PMYQT0bfktf0J1QCtWFt49ExVrrV2QzZvkwW25tQ8ic8tMVIlyMS5yuBH7yVi_wlrkEMTtnREahQd1Xn7hiEcy0AdeE/s200/Meteor+Crater+-+6.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div>
In addition the meteor to having scientific and geologic significance, there's technological significance. The Apollo program spent quite a bit of time at the crater working out logistics for the lunar landings. There are artifacts and information from the Apollo program at the site as well. At the bottom of the crater, there was a mockup of an astronaut planting the USA flag. From out postion at the top of the crater, this couldn't been seen with the naked eye, it required using one of the provided telescopes. That crater was big! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuS2SUquB0mX95T6Nb6DR8oINdNkk4bzKN23BFNDAV5n8ZSJs2D-LZrVHbQpJiowUEjRouSyT2zkE94oORPeFBHviEecaKkDPiygyQ2CL3-pSNdvMoHaCoLh5XZjKkh2WSTxo0jlyfHuU/s1600/Meteor+Crater+-+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuS2SUquB0mX95T6Nb6DR8oINdNkk4bzKN23BFNDAV5n8ZSJs2D-LZrVHbQpJiowUEjRouSyT2zkE94oORPeFBHviEecaKkDPiygyQ2CL3-pSNdvMoHaCoLh5XZjKkh2WSTxo0jlyfHuU/s200/Meteor+Crater+-+8.jpg" width="200" /></a>On the road leading out of the crater site, we noticed a group of rusted old cars way out in the desert. We stopped and took a hike to investigate. Interestingly, they were at the intersection of two dirt roads. It's almost as if an accident happened 80 years ago and they just left the vehicles there. After pondering how the site came to be, we made our way back to the car and got back on the road. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As we sailed on towards Tucson, we enjoyed more of the beautiful painted deserts and road side attractions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Late in the day, we arrived in Tucson, and picked up Mom from the airport. It's not often we travel 2935 miles to pick someone up from the airport. I don't think we would want to do this on a daily basis.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Tomorrow we visit the Pima air museum and the aircraft boneyards. The boneyard is the reason we travelled off of the direct path to Fremont. Oliver has been wanted to visited the boneyard for a few years now. Tomorrow the day will arrive. </div>

</tbody></table>
Day 5 finds us venturing west on I-40 along the old Route 66 from Weatherford, Oklahoma to Gallup, New Mexico. This will be the longest leg of our Tesla Coast to Coast journey. While most of the day will be spent driving, there are a few special stops we have planned. Of course, even before we were underway, Oliver was excited about getting a picture with an original Route 66 sign. Fortunately for us we found one at our first stop.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimujav2hvIz90gX7PxpSw9V1iAY9VGqaVsiO9kUhWENo7RwVRTCmcOGFoNXtKhSA16o9KEq4ZZBGotuAYsUjA2Rmma1D0AE5OGnA8g0htym4vTFjojgZQQGWHBQeO4OIOvGaZ7720-eJ4/s1600/crayons+-+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimujav2hvIz90gX7PxpSw9V1iAY9VGqaVsiO9kUhWENo7RwVRTCmcOGFoNXtKhSA16o9KEq4ZZBGotuAYsUjA2Rmma1D0AE5OGnA8g0htym4vTFjojgZQQGWHBQeO4OIOvGaZ7720-eJ4/s200/crayons+-+1.jpg" width="200" /></a>Our first stop was for a quick charge in Shamrock,Texas. The Tesla chargers are located in the parking lot of a historic Conoco gas station. They no longer serve fossil fuels here, only electricity. This station was the basis for one of the buildings in the Cars movies and Oliver was very interested in its history. Curator Diane gave us an awesome tour and history lesson as well as helping take some photos of us. This is a must stop for anyone traveling this route. There is some interesting history to be learned here. If you want to know more about the place, you can find them on Facebook at U-DROP INN.<br />
<br />

This is the home of the free 72 ounce steak and fixins. Provided you can eat it all in 60 minutes of course. While we chose to go the modest route, we were still able to see the challenge area and the timers they have for multiple challengers who want a free meal. Our waiter, Daniel, was very well-versed in all the facts and history related to the challenge. He was able to answer all of Oliver's questions with ease. It turns out that all the answers can be found on the cups for our drinks. During our lunch, we were serenaded by a roaming minstrel, David Waddle, who sang some Johnny Cash tunes for us. We told him the story of Oliver's cousin Cash and he enjoyed it.<br />

This middle of cornfield homage to the Cadillac of cars is a Route 66 icon. The Cadillacs are well preserved considering they're exposed to elements and just plopped into the ground. I suppose it's the hundred layers of paint has something to do with the preservation of the vehicles. Of course, if someone chose to stick a Model S in the ground like that they wouldn't have to worry about painting it, because aluminum doesn't rust.<br />
<br />
The rest of the trip was quite enjoyable, the New Mexico desert is a sight to behold. Fortunately for us, there were few traffic problems and the Tesla lapped up the miles like a kitten lapping up cream. Thank goodness for auto pilot.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow, we meet up with Mom in Tucson. Will we be at the airport on time? Tune in tomorrow.<br />

Yes, this trip is called Tesla Coast to Coast and we plan to make a few stops at locations that have stores and superchargers. This location was a bonus because it had that and a service center. We had heard it was pretty nice and we weren't disappointed. What a fancy place compared to our little center in Durham. Tina, Kelly, and Susan were very helpful in finding Oliver the T-shirt we've been trying to get for the past few weeks. Now we'll have matching shirts. Day three started with an incredible find. Our motel provided us with a free breakfast. Usually you get your choice of breakfast cereals, milk, bagels, various hot items, and that really fancy waffle maker that flips over to make the perfect waffle. This time, we could find no waffle maker. Oh no, a major fail for Oliver, he lives on those waffles when we travel. Fortunately for us, the attendant was nearby and mentioned that they have fresh pancakes. Of course, Oliver was game, but, to us, there were no pancakes to be found. And then she pointed out a big chrome machine that makes pancakes from scratch while you wait. This thing was crazy, it pops out the perfect pancakes right before your eyes. Oliver had an enjoyable breakfast and the world was right again.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After breakfast, we got on the road for Houston. The goal was to arrive in time to explore Space Center Houston. This portion of the trip was only a little tricky in that there aren't many high powered charging solutions (that we were prepared for anyway) in the area in and around the space center. This would mean a little more planning to ensure we wouldn't be stuck somewhere waiting on a public charger to get us to our next destination. We had planned stops at a supercharger in Lake Charles, LA, a Level 2 (meaning slower) charger in Baytown, TX, and a charge at our hotel for the night in Houston, TX. When we arrived at Lake Charles at around 10:30, we noticed that there was a Sonic right next to the supercharger. Well, we had actually planned to eat at the Sonic in Baytown later that day so we started thinking... if we did a range charge (charge the Tesla all the way up) there would be no need to stop in Baytown. Range charges take longer, as Oliver will be happy to explain, as it takes almost as long to get from 80% to 100% full as it does from <a href="https://www.tesla.com/supercharger" target="_blank">10% to 80%</a>. Stuffing in every last electron just takes longer. Saving the extra stop might be worth it and we would just eat an early lunch at around 11:30. We met some great folks who were at Sonic in their Corvettes. They had just lost some cash at the local casinos and were washing down their woes with milkshakes. Prior to lunch, I was able to get some supercharger crossfit in, for those in the the know this was intended to be a 20 minute AMRAP of 30 single unders (jump rope), 20 squats, and 10 push ups. Oliver turned it into a photo session, so I am not sure what I ended up with...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After lunch it was straight to the Space Center Houston. The navigation system messed with us bit and we ended up having to get directions from some federal officers on the base. Also, Oliver became obsessed with a light ouse we saw so we had to discuss finding it after our time at the space center. At the space center, we toured mission control at the Johnson Space Center, the rocket yard, and Independence Plaza among other others. We got to see many lunar artifacts that were very interesting. Oliver had fun but ran out of energy early, we ended up leaving before closing. He just wanted to find that lighthouse.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHD7Kw2XTNumxLXJwscL4BDFZaL88uA3vD7V18M8J9_UmN_da2LwdaJA06Iz3FhE4ugZmJ0aB_8wfR1pq5RDQa7eu_K4TL6rmswvL_WsCplLWgSOUseDsq378Y9oGADDAtVcK7JQ41Jr4/s1600/IMG_6375.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHD7Kw2XTNumxLXJwscL4BDFZaL88uA3vD7V18M8J9_UmN_da2LwdaJA06Iz3FhE4ugZmJ0aB_8wfR1pq5RDQa7eu_K4TL6rmswvL_WsCplLWgSOUseDsq378Y9oGADDAtVcK7JQ41Jr4/s200/IMG_6375.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div>
We were able to use the map in the Tesla to figure out where that lighthouse was located. When we arrived at the lighthouse, I realized it was part of a development and not an actual lighthouse. That explained things a bit, because I couldn't figure out why a light house would be placed so far inland. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We ended the day and one of the fancier hotels of the trip, the Hotel Zaza. Oliver loved this place. We had a great dinner and Oliver made a new friend with someone visiting from San Francisco, spent some time in the pool, and were happy to get some down time in a room with a view. Since the hotel is in the museum district, we'll spend some time exploring in the morning before heading on to Oklahoma. </div>

After our long day one, we were ready for a day with few delays and new sights. On the way out of Auburn, we were able to check out the Auburn University campus. The exterior architecture was very nice, we didn't have time to explore the interiors.<br />
<br />
At our first charge stop, we ran into the family from New York that saw us eating ribs and pork at the Atlanta charging station. Had quite a good conversation with them about travel. Turns out they are making there way to Houston so we might see them again.<br />

Our first tourist stop, was Biloxi, Mississippi. This was an unplanned stop that I'm glad we added. We checked out the Biloxi lighthouse and museum. Interestingly, there was a large contingent of folks hunting Pokeman. Like a whole tour bus load.<br />
<br />

After our stint in Biloxi, we moved on to New Orleans. There is still some rebuilding going on there so I had to review for Oliver what transpired a year before he was born. He took much interest in the structures that still hand't been rebuilt and evidence of water damage on others. Our goal was to visit the French Quarter and have some beignets. That goal was accomplished at the Cafe Du Monde, a famous location for this delight. Needless to say, Oliver was quite pleased.<br />
<br />
In order to not end another post on the topic of food, I need to mention some other items. We visited Jefferson Park, checked out the Mississippi river, visited some eclectic stores, and did some people watching. Overall, a much better day than day one. Tomorrow, it's on to Houston!<br />

<div>
Our day one plan was to make this one of the longer travel days of our journey. Since we would be traveling through areas that we've been to many times before, we wouldn't need to build in too many stops. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
We had quite a slow start for this journey. We ended up leaving Durham 3 hours and 15 minutes late. Oliver took this better than expected and logged the time deltas. Throughout most of the day, he was a able to verify that his plan was working as expected and that the charging calculations were very accurate. What he did not anticipate was road construction into Charlotte, just plain bad traffic out of Charlotte, a bus fire going into Atlanta that backup traffic for 20 miles, and construction that brought three lanes down to one on the way out of Atlanta. These delays added a few unexpected hours to the trip. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Autopilot Selfie</td></tr>

<div>
Our Tesla's autopilot system made most of the delays tolerable as it's a champ in stop and go freeway traffic. I don't get to use it that way in Durham much, but I'll bet for drivers and big cities they've found paradise. PS: Auto pilot is really cool for selfies.</div>

Our major point of interest this day was our dinner stop. Fat Matt's rib shack. My wife and her mother discovered this place on a trip they took to Atlanta and we've been fans ever since. It's a must stop for us whenever we visit Atlanta. They have a stage and host blues bands often. The band this evening did not dissapoint. Fortunately for us, the lines weren't too long and we were able to get our food quickly. Due to all of the delays, we had decided to get take our and eat at the supercharger. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We setup at the supercharger and ate while the car charged. We got some interesting looks from some passerby Tesla owners. It was a blast and the food was great. </div>

<span class="s1">For many, the cross country road trip is a right of passage. For nine year old Oliver, it is a dream that became an award winning math project. A dream that just may become reality in the summer of 2016. Oliver’s dream is to travel from his home in Durham, North Carolina to visit the Tesla Motors factory in Fremont, California and then home. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1"><b>The Dream</b></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">This<a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Tf8_UOMXe1O8Ee3giiG2eQKMSO0&usp=sharing" target="_blank"> cross country trip</a> would be done in the family’s Tesla Model S. The trip would strategically follow a route along Tesla’s supercharger network. A network of chargers that enables quick charges of the Tesla high capacity battery packs. Along the the way, he would visit some great destinations including New Orleans, the Houston Space center, Route 66, Tucson aircraft boneyards, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite Park, San Francisco and more. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1"><b>The Math Project </b></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBzsFtp6YD6Zz3Nskz-wm8-muRo4KlVHXwgetpQz7cWJ_4L_d4x91dkp-QOe4j-9rRK8ObBaRYlQJVAvbD_zhbc5sakC1B55fYmQsxxNk_DzhClidnV3_9NhrkMb4vvuWcCvaL9H4kNs/s1600/Oliver_State.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Picture of Oliver in front of math project at State Math" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBzsFtp6YD6Zz3Nskz-wm8-muRo4KlVHXwgetpQz7cWJ_4L_d4x91dkp-QOe4j-9rRK8ObBaRYlQJVAvbD_zhbc5sakC1B55fYmQsxxNk_DzhClidnV3_9NhrkMb4vvuWcCvaL9H4kNs/s320/Oliver_State.JPG" title="NC State 3-4grade First Place Math Project" width="240" /></a></div>
<span class="s1">A trip of this magnitude requires lots of planning. Of course, you could take the easy way out and plan the entire trip using the Tesla’s onboard computer. Instead, Oliver decided to do it “old school” and would plan the trip using only a map of the nation, pencils, paper, and the mathematics that he knew. The additional data he needed were the locations of the superchargers, the maximum range of the family’s Tesla on a charge, the best charging practice for such travel, and the maximum time his father would drive in a day. Armed with this information, Oliver proceeded with this project which he titled “Tesla Coast to Coast.”</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">The project took Oliver a month of Saturdays to put together. After diligently plotting of the supercharging stations on a map of the USA, working out the optimum charge time and related distances, scoping out the locations he wanted to visit, and confirming these with family, Oliver proceeded to outline his plan on a map that was eventually pasted to a standard size project board. The board was colored fittingly in Tesla’s signature red color. The project included his written notes on the math techniques utilized, an itinerary for the east coast to west coast portion of the tour, note cards for a five minute presentation of his findings, and some props to keep the interest of the viewer. It was this plan that he took the local, regional, and state math fairs. He won first place in the elementary division at each. Along the way, he convinced more than a few judges that he’ll be taking the trip.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1"><b>Making it a Reality</b></span></div>
<div class="p1">
